Wearing disposable gloves also helps prevent the transmission of bacteria and viruses.

There is a correct way to put on and remove disposable gloves so that they are effective.

How to Put on Disposable Gloves

Select the appropriate size of gloves. Ill-fitting gloves increase the likelihood of injury or contamination. If the gloves are too big, the loosefitting material will reduce your dexterity and ability to grip.

Put on gloves as follows:

  1. Remove watches, rings and other jewelry from your hands. This is to prevent accidental tears in the gloves.

  2. Wash your hands with soap and water. If these are not available, use hand sanitizer.

  3. Pick up a glove by pinching the inside and outside of the cuff. Be careful to touch as little of the outside of the glove as possible. Carefully slide your other hand into the glove.
  4. Do not adjust the glove’s position on your hand until the other glove is on.

  5. Pick up the second glove by pinching the inside and outside of the cuff and put the glove on as above.

  6. Check to make sure there are no visible rips, tears or holes in the gloves. If there are any, remove the gloves, wash your hands and put on new gloves.

  7. Pull each glove cuff toward your wrist to cover as much skin as possible and secure the glove.

  8. If you touch your face, if a glove tears or if you have any doubt about the gloves being dirty or contaminated:
  9. a. Immediately remove the gloves and dispose of them.

  10. b. Wash your hands thoroughly.

  11. c. Put on a fresh pair of gloves.

How to Remove Disposable Gloves

By removing disposable gloves correctly, you reduce the risk of spreading bacteria or a virus to your bare skin or the surfaces around you. To remove disposable gloves, do the following:

  1. Remove the gloves in a clean space, not near food or any food-contact surface.

  2. Pinch the outside of one glove at the wrist.

  3. Peel downward, away from your wrist, turning the glove inside out. Pull the glove away until it is removed from your hand.

  4. Hold the inside-out glove with your gloved hand.

  5. With your gloveless hand, slide your fingers under the wrist of the glove. Do not touch the outside surface of the glove.

  6. Peel downward, away from your wrist, turning the glove inside out. Pull the glove away until it is removed from your hand.

  7. Continue pulling the glove down, over the first glove. This ensures both gloves are inside out and that any contaminants do not come in contact with your bare hands.

  8. Dispose of the gloves after each use. Never reuse them.

  9. Wash your hands thoroughly.
